DNR to conduct prescribed burn at Maple River State Game Area today
The Department of Natural Resources will conduct a prescribed burn this morning at the Maple River State Game Area (Gratiot County). Encompassing roughly 140 acres, the burn will reduce grass to improve wildlife habitat.
Prescribed burns are planned to achieve specific objectives – oftentimes simulating the benefits of natural fires. The burns are conducted by highly trained DNR personnel in designated state-managed areas during appropriate weather conditions and in cooperation with the proper authorities and local units of government.
In addition to enhancing wildlife habitat, prescribed burns are used to:
- Help with forest regeneration;
- Restore and maintain native plant life;
- Control invasive plant species; and
- Reduce the risk of wildfires.
