Natural Resources Commission to meet Thursday in Lansing

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission (NRC) will hold its first regular monthly meeting of the year on Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health at Michigan State University, 4125 Beaumont Road, in Lansing.

The day begins with a 9 a.m. meeting of the NRC Finance Committee. The committee will hear how the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will report new license revenue expenditures and how DNR divisions measure progress; receive an update on the department’s year-end and Wildlife Division audit; and be briefed on federal funds that support programs for fish and wildlife.

At 10:30 a.m., the Marketing and Outreach Advisory Committee will receive updates on hunting, fishing, camping and Recreation Passport participation. DNR staff will also present results of a hunting/fishing customer satisfaction survey; provide updates on the Pure Michigan Fishing campaign, Youth Conservation Council activities and the Pure Michigan Hunt; and report on a new radio show partnership.

The NRC Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries will meet at 1 p.m., with updates from Fisheries Division and Wildlife Division, including reports on recently concluded elk and wolf hunting seasons.

The Committee of the Whole follows at 2:30 p.m. NRC Chairman J.R. Richardson will introduce new commissioner Vicki Pontz of Portland, Mich. The committee will hear updates on several items including Operation Freedom Outdoors; the Roscommon Forest Fire Experiment Station; first-quarter timber sales; outdoor recreation events and sports shows; the Black Lake sturgeon harvest quota; and the Belle Isle transition. DNR legislative liaison Trevor VanDyke will also provide an update.

Following public comments, the NRC is scheduled to address allowable uses of deer salvaged from motor vehicle collisions. Items scheduled for action by DNR Director Keith Creagh include an order on fish disease control; acceptance of the State Trails Implementation Plan; and several land transactions.
