Below is a sampling of the family-friendly activities
across the state for the month of December. For a full listing of events at
state parks, visitor centers, hatcheries, museums and more, visit us at www.michigan.gov/dnrcalendar.
The DNR, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Michigan Recreation and Park Association partnered together to help Michigan residents get Fresh Air Fit on New Year’s Day with special "Shoe Year's Day" snowshoe and hiking events taking place in state parks and recreation areas across the state. Save the date -- most events take place Jan. 1 but there are a few others later that week. Strap on a pair of snowshoes or lace up hiking boots and join other fitness-minded individuals for the "Shoe Year's Day" treks. Participants will receive healthy lifestyle tips from local experts, enjoy healthy refreshments, and have the opportunity to make an official pledge to get Fresh Air Fit this year!
All "Shoe Year's Day" events are free, and snowshoes will be available to rent at most locations. Check out the January calendar for details!
Cabin rentals are available for overnight stays at state park and recreation areas across the state. Now, cabin and camping reservations are made easier than ever with the DNR’s new and improved website and call center campground reservation system (CRS), which is now accessible from your smart phone!

If you have never seen or heard an owl up close, you will not want to miss out on this fascinating nature walk! Visit a Michigan state park or recreation area near you for a 30 to 45 minute walk in the woods with a local naturalist, calling out to wild owls and awaiting their response. After the hike, stick around for s'mores and storytelling around a bonfire.
Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather, as you will be outside for the duration of this event. No pre-registration is required.
Owl Prowls are taking at the following locations:

Learn how to weave a pair of traditional snowshoes, similar to the way Native Americans crafted them for generations. Reserve your spot to take a snowshoe-building class at Ludington State Park on Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
These hand-made snowshoes can be used for hiking throughout the winter, holiday gifts, and/or used as a decoration in your home. Snowshoeing is an easy and inexpensive way to get outside and burn some calories during the winter months! The cost for making a pair of snowshoes is $190, which includes the pre-formed wooden frames, lacing, high-quality bindings, and personal instruction. This activity requires concentration over long periods of time, so it is suggested for ages 16 years and older.
Class sizes are limited and reservations are required. To make a reservation, please call Ludington State Park at (231) 843-9261 or email Alan Wernette at wernettea@michigan.gov.
