Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery offers 5k run, hatchery tours, more this fall
The Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery Visitor Center is gearing up to offer a variety of programs this fall, including a 5k run, fall color walks, pumpkin-painting and more. The hatchery also offers guided tours, where visitors can get an up-close look at the fish and learn how biologists raise millions of fish every year to stock Michigan’s lakes, rivers and streams.
Hook, Line and Sinker kids fishing program
Saturday, Oct.12, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Youth ages 3 to 16 can practice catch-and-release fishing. Because these ponds are stocked, kids have a good chance of catching fish. No fishing license is required for youth under the age of 17. No pre-registration is required, and all equipment and bait is provided.
Fall Salmon Run 5k and Little Fry Fun Run
Saturday, Oct. 19, at 9 a.m.
Take to the trails on the grounds of the fish hatchery for the first-ever 5k event. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of Wolf Lake, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works to support the educational efforts of the hatchery and visitor center. DNR Fisheries Division Chief Jim Dexter will be the event emcee and awards presenter. More information is available at www.friendsofwolflake.org.
Hatchery tours
Dates and times vary
Tours of the hatchery include explanation of the egg-take and fertilization process, the life cycle, and an up-close look at fish in various stages of life. On the weekdays, tours are by special reservation only; on Saturdays at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.; and on Sundays at noon and 2 p.m. Tours last approximately 30 minutes and will be available during October and the first three weekends in November.
Fall color walks
Saturday, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Take a gentle stroll and enjoy the beautiful fall season. Learn why trees change color in the fall, and see a variety of tree species in their autumn splendor and learn how to identify some common Michigan species.
Harvest at the Hatchery
Saturday, Oct. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Paint pumpkins, discover critters and learn about the most feared fish of the Great Lakes at a variety of activity stations.
Unless otherwise noted, programs are one hour in length, offered free of charge and open to all ages and skill levels. The walks are not strenuous and are approximately 1 mile or less.
