Find hidden treasures

Man and woman finding a cache in the woods

Combine technology with good old-fashioned treasure hunting and learn to geocache. The Waterloo Recreation Area's Eddy Discovery Center in Chelsea is offering “Geocaching 101” workshops, where you’ll get all of the instructions and gear you’ll need. Plus, we’ll get you started with uncovering a cache or two at the park! Programs are offered Aug. 3 and 18 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This is just one of the DNR’s free “learn how to do it” programs in the Recreation 101 series. Others include topics like Kitemaking 101, Stand Up Paddleboarding 101, Kayaking 101, Disc Golf 101 and many more! Check out the Recreation 101 calendar to see the full lineup.

Join us for Hook, Line and Sinker

Young boy learning to fish

Don't summer get away without learning how to fish! The DNR is hosting free Hook, Line and Sinker programs at over 30 parks across the state to help you get started! Learn about basic equipment--rods, reels, lures, hooks, lines--we'll explain it all! And you'll get plenty of practice casting. When you catch a fish, we'll show you how to safely release it.

We'll provide the bait, and in most cases, we've got equipment for you to borrow if you don't have your own. Children under 17 are not required to have a fishing license.

Below are a handful of Hook, Line and Sinker events going on in the next couple of weeks. Be sure to click on the links for details!

Visit Michigan's "lone" wolverine

Wolverine

Visit the Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery Visitor Center in Mattawan and check out the first wolverine ever authenticated in Michigan. A special exhibit featuring the “lone” wolverine will be on display at the center through Aug. 25.

The animal was discovered in the Thumb area in 2004, where it roamed the Minden City State Game Area until its natural death in 2010. Get an up-close look at the wolverine, which has been preserved by taxidermy, as well as information and photos of its time in Michigan.  An animal rarely seen in the wild, the wolverine has drawn large, curious crowds at each stop along its statewide tour.
