Equine Trailways Subcommittee Update

Equine Trailways Subcommittee: EQ NewsNote #2
July 23, 2013

Dear Equestrian Trail Riding Association Leader:
Please alert your members to the call for nominations for equine trail riders to serve on the Equine Trailways Subcommittee (ETS). Nominations can be for an individual either from the northern Lower Peninsula or from the southeastern Lower Peninsula. The northern Lower Peninsula position is currently held by Mr. Dick Kleinhardt; the southeastern Lower Peninsula is currently held by Ms. Jan Herrick.

The ETS was established in Public Acts 45 and 46 (aka Right to Ride). It is a subcommittee of the Michigan Snowmobile Trails Advisory Committee (MSTAC) which is comprised of nonmotorized and motorized trail users. The MSTAC has completed a comprehensive trail plan and is developing the implementation schedule for the plan. The ETS has a chapter and appendix in the plan about improving equine access; it also works independently of the MSTAC to improve DNR processes for trail/campground identification and approval, as well addressing as many other equine trail riding issues. While travel costs are reimbursed, ETS members serve without compensation. Minutes of the ETS and MSTAC meetings can be found on the DNR website.

Nominations should be submitted to:

The Honorable Randy Richardville
Senate Majority Leader
P.O Box 30036
Lansing Michigan  48909-7536

And

The Honorable Jase Bolger
Speaker of the House
PO Box 30014
Lansing, Mi   48909-7514

A copy of the nominations should go to:

Mr. Trevor VanDyke
Legislative Liaison and Policy Advisor
Stevens T. Mason Building
P.O. Box 30028
Lansing, Mi 48909-7528

Nominations  should include a letter from the nominated candidate indicating their willingness to serve and participate on the ETS, along with a brief description of their (public) service experience and association with the broader equestrian community. Ideally, the candidate should identify in the letter how informed they are with the past three years of ETS activities and the comprehensive plan’s equestrian recommendations. For example, this identification could include the candidate stating what he or she feels is the most important equestrian recommendations to implement from the comprehensive plan.

Nominations should be made no later than September 3, 2013.

Sandra S. Batie
Chair of the ETS
