DNR offers Sept. 7 'Beyond BOW' pheasant-hunting workshop for women
Women interested in getting in some hands-on practice before the October pheasant season opener may want to check out a special offering from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). On Saturday, Sept. 7, the DNR’s Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program will hold a one-day “Beyond BOW” pheasant-hunting workshop just for women. The program is for women who have previous shooting experience and would like to expand on their abilities.

This workshop – co-sponsored by Black Duck Sporting Clays – will run from 9 a.m. to roughly 4 p.m. at the Black Duck Hunting Preserve in Rapid River, Mich. Participants are asked to bring their own gun and high brass ammo for hunting and target ammo for shooting clays. Previous experience with a firearm is required for this program.
A few workshop notes:
-
The hunt includes an opportunity for up to three pheasants per person; shooting at clays; guides; dogs, and lunch.
-
Participants will take turns with shooting clays before heading out for pheasants.
-
Each participant will be required to have a $15 small game license in order to take part in this event; those who don’t have one will need to purchase one before the workshop.
The one-day workshop costs $85 per person. Participants must be 18 or older. Enrollment is limited, and the registration deadline is Aug. 30. Class information and registration materials are available on the DNR website at www.michigan.gov/bow and registration can be paid online at www.michigan.gov/estore.
“Our Beyond BOW programs are created especially for women who have some outdoor skills and experience and are seeking to enhance them even further,” said BOW coordinator Sharon Pitz. “Pheasant hunting is a Michigan tradition for many families. This one-day workshop is a chance to enrich that tradition for interested individuals.”
The Beyond BOW pheasant-hunting workshop is a rain-or-shine event. For more information, contact Sharon Pitz at 906-228-6561 or email at pitzs@michigan.gov.
