Foote Dam tailwater access on the AuSable River closed for construction May 1
Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials have been notified that Consumers Energy will begin its construction project on the Foote Dam tailwater access on the AuSable River beginning Wednesday, May 1. This access site, in Iosco County, will be closed to public use for most of the 2013 construction season.
The main project involves Consumers Energy rebuilding the sheet pile wall that provides the principal shore-fishing access at its renewable-energy hydroelectric plant. Fencing will indicate construction boundaries.
“Safety is our top priority at Consumers Energy,” said Richard Castle, Consumers Energy’s senior resource manager for hydro generation. “We appreciate people’s patience and understanding while we complete our project and enhance public safety.”
The project design has been developed in consultation with the DNR and reviewed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which licenses and regulates Consumers Energy hydro facilities.
The access site, operated under a lease agreement with the DNR, draws anglers from throughout Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, particularly during spring and fall steelhead and salmon runs.
“The DNR recognizes the need for these improvements,” said Chuck Allen, Tawas Point State Park manager, who also oversees the Foote access. ”We believe the site reconstruction will greatly broaden accessibility for anglers of all abilities and ensure the Foote tailwater access remains one of Michigan’s favorite fishing destinations.”
Allen points to a variety of outdoor recreational activities available nearby, including Harrisville State Park on Lake Huron and the rustic Rockport State Park in Alpena. He suggests visiting www.michigan.gov/stateparks for more information.
