Local Friends group contributes 1,830 volunteer hours
to Walker Tavern Historic Site projects, events
More than 50 volunteers from Hillsdale, Lenawee, Jackson and Washtenaw counties were honored on Oct.13 for their contributions to Walker Tavern Historic Site near Brooklyn, Mich. The Friends of Walker Tavern – contributing 1,830 hours of service in 2012 – support the site’s many volunteer efforts.
“Giving 1,830 hours of volunteer service is an extraordinary effort and very much appreciated,” noted site manager Laurie Perkins. “At least six of our volunteers gave more than 100 hours of their time and talents to the site’s summer programs.”
“There is always something exciting to do at the site and I appreciate the enthusiasm and willingness of our volunteers to assist with our many activities,” said Bonnie McJennett, president of the Friends of Walker Tavern.
During the 2012 season, volunteers worked with school programs, operated the Mercantile Store, planted flowers and gave tours of the site. Their assistance was critical for events such as the Civil War weekend, car show, Stage Coach Days and the weekly farmers’ market.
“We are looking forward to a very ambitious schedule of events in 2013 and would enjoy adding new members and volunteers to our Walker Tavern family,” said McJennett.
Sandra Clark, director of the Michigan Historical Center, extended her congratulations at Saturday’s luncheon. “It is extremely important that the partnerships we forge with our Friends groups continue to be vital and active,” she said. “Simply put, there are so many things in our museum field site system that we just could not do without our volunteers.”
