Enjoy Christmas in July
Celebrate a winter holiday in the warmth of the July sunshine, with activities that would be tough to do in Michigan in December! Watch a bike parade, play games, win prizes, get your picture taken with Santa, make crafts, and decorate your campsite—or see how others transform their sites. Join us for this summertime twist on holiday traditions at the following parks:

See Michigan’s “lone” wolverine
Take an up-close look at Michigan’s “lone” wolverine. Discovered in the thumb area in 2004, it roamed the Minden City State Game Area until its natural death in 2010. A taxidermy of the wolverine--along with information about its time in Michigan-- is on exhibit across the state and will be at Hartwick Pines State Park in Grayling July 26 – Aug. 15.

Two people baiting a fishing hook
Bait those hooks!
You’ve probably heard some variation of the saying, “If you give a man a fish, you’ll feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” We take that quote literally! Many of our state parks offer “Fishing 101” opportunities, where you and your family will have fun while learning to bait your hook, cast your line, and reel in a fish! Best of all, we provide the bait and equipment.

Waterloo Recreation Area in Chelsea, July 21
Brighton Recreation Area in Brighton, July 21
Ludington State Park in Ludington, July 24, 31
Mitchell State Park in Cadillac, July 25 (special bass fishing program), Aug.1

These are just a few of the DNR’s free “learn how to do it” programs in the Recreation 101 series. Others include topics like Archery 101, Geocaching 101, Kayaking 101, Outdoor Cooking 101 and many more! Check out the Recreation 101 calendar to see the full lineup.

Civil War reenactment with cannon
Hear the boom of a Civil War cannon
If you’ve ever wondered how soldiers lived during the Civil War—what kind of foods they ate, how they slept, what they wore, what their tools of the trade were—plan to visit a Civil War encampment and see for yourself! Stroll among military and civilian camps, see artillery demonstrations and get a feel for life near the battlefield.

Fort Wilkins State Park in Copper Harbor, July 27-29
Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee, Aug. 4-5

Dog ready to retrieve waterfowl
Looking Ahead:
Whether you’re a duck hunter or not, you’ll find plenty to entertain the family at Bay City State Recreation Area’s annual waterfowl festival Aug. 4-5. We’ll have a Hunting and Outdoor Recreation Expo with over 100 exhibitors, waterfowl-calling championships, a dog fun hunt trial, a Quack-Athalon (think triathlon but with canoeing, air rifle marksmanship and duck identification), and lots of special demonstrations. Don’t miss this chance to have fun while learning about the ducks and geese that depend on wetlands for staging, nesting and breeding. More details >>
