When: Saturday, July 14, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Why: Everyone should have access to go fishing; Sleepy Hollow State Park provides individuals with disabilities the chance to do so.
Come visit Sleepy Hollow State Park to learn about accessible fishing in Michigan’s state parks and the various opportunities to get involved. At the event, participants will enjoy a variety of activities; including basic “how-to” fishing instruction, hands-on fishing demonstrations (from the shore, from a pier and from a boat), and fun fishing exercises. All equipment and bait will be provided. This event is free, however, a Recreation Passport is required for entry.
Please note, those 17 years of age or older who plan to participate in this event must purchase a Michigan fishing license ahead of time and have it in their possession. Also note that all fishing regulations will apply.
This event is a partnership between the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Parks and Recreation and Fisheries Divisions.
Background
Sleepy Hollow State Park is part of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and contains more than 2,600 acres. A river winds its way through the woods and fields of the park, and Lake Ovid is nestled in the middle of it all. Lake Ovid, covering 410-acres, was developed by damming the Little Maple River. The park offers year-round opportunity for recreation. Lake Ovid is a popular fishing destination. Major species include large mouth bass, bluegill, crappie, perch, channel catfish and muskellunge. A modern boat launch is available year round. Boat rentals are available during the summer months. Lake Ovid is a ‘no wake’ lake.
