Join us for the next Herd & Hunter: Bovine TB Connections meeting Monday, March 9, from 6 to 8 p.m.
To ensure you have the latest information on bovine tuberculosis in Michigan, the meeting will include updates from the following speakers:
- Dr. Mike VanderKlok, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development: information regarding the bovine TB-infected cattle herds in Presque Isle and Charlevoix counties.
- Pat Ryan, U.S. Department of Agriculture-Wildlife Services: how Wildlife Services can assist landowners.
- Emily Sewell, Michigan Department of Natural Resources: 2025 deer season summary for Deer Management Unit 487 and preliminary disease surveillance results.
In addition to these updates, the meeting will feature a presentation on the longhorned tick, an invasive species recently found in southwest Michigan. This tick poses an emerging concern for livestock as it can cause heavy infestations and transmit unwanted diseases. White-tailed deer can be an important wildlife host that may help disperse the tick and support populations in the environment. In this presentation, Dr. Will Miller, associate professor of biology at Calvin University and Certified Wildlife Biologist®, will describe the discovery of this species in Berrien County in 2025, introduce the ecology of the tick, and discuss the public, veterinary, and wildlife health implications of this invasive pest.
