Enjoy northern Michigan, but be careful on trails and forest roads
If your Fourth of July plans include beautiful northern Michigan, be aware of lingering hazards and damage from the March 28-30 ice storm.
While all state parks and boating access sites are now open, and we expect all state forest campgrounds to be open by the weekend, approximately 60% of DNR-managed motorized and nonmotorized trails in the region remain temporarily closed.
The good news is that the North Western State Trail, North Central State Trail and North Eastern State Trail are open, along with many others. Please respect all other trail closures, and keep in mind that even recently opened trails might still need additional maintenance.
For the latest status updates on state-managed facilities, trails and forest roads (including open, partially open or temporarily closed), please refer to the map and dashboard on the DNR's ice storm response page.
Check out the story map detailing the impact of the ice storm, the response and recovery efforts and more.
