Prescribed burns scheduled today in Allegan County
Multiple prescribed burns are scheduled in Allegan County for today. Planned burns include:
- In Clyde Township, 40 acres will be burned starting around 11 a.m. to improve turkey, mallard and grassland bird habitats.
- A 49-acre burn in Clyde Township will begin around 1 p.m. to help set back woody vegetation and rejuvenate grasses and reduce spotted knapweed.
- In Ganges Township, 18 acres will be burned starting between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to reduce spotted knapweed in cool season grasses and set back woody vegetation.
Prescribed burns are one way the Michigan Department of Natural Resources keeps lands and forests healthy. The burns are conducted by highly trained DNR personnel in designated state-managed areas during appropriate weather conditions and in cooperation with the proper authorities and local units of government.
Public safety is a top priority during all prescribed burns, which sometimes are canceled at the last minute due to careful monitoring of weather and wind conditions.
