Rockport boating access site to close temporarily
The Department of Natural Resources announced today that the Rockport boating access site in Alpena County will temporarily close from April 23 through May 11, 2012, due to maintenance at the facility.
DNR Parks and Recreation Division staff will be working diligently to get the site open as soon as possible. In the meantime, other boating access sites in the area that may be used include:
-
Presque Isle State Harbor in Presque Isle, located 7 miles south of Rockport
(Phone: 989-595-3069) -
Rogers City Marina in Rogers City, located 20 miles north of Presque Isle State Harbor
(Phone: 989-734-3808) -
Alpena Municipal Marina in Alpena, located 28 miles south of Presque Isle State Harbor
(Phone: 989-356-0551)
This project is funded through the Michigan State Waterways Fund, a restricted fund derived from the collection of boat registration fees, a portion of the Michigan marine fuel tax and user fees. Waterways funding is dedicated to the acquisition, construction, operation and maintenance of recreational boating facilities.
For more information about the status of this project, contact Eric Ostrander, Harrisville State Park supervisor, at 989-724-5126, or Dave Stempky, Cheboygan Field Office manager, at 231-627-9011. For a statewide list of boating access sites, visit the Michigan Recreational Boating Information System at www.mcgi.state.mi.us/MRBIS.
The Recreation Passport has replaced motor vehicle permits for entry into Michigan state parks, recreation areas and state-administered boating access fee sites. This new way to fund Michigan's outdoor recreation opportunities also helps to preserve state forest campgrounds, trails and historic and cultural sites in state parks, and provides park development grants to local communities. Michigan residents can purchase the Recreation Passport ($10 for motor vehicles; $5 for motorcycles) by checking "YES" on their license plate renewal forms, or at any state park or recreation area. To learn more about the Recreation Passport, visit www.michigan.gov/recreationpassport or call 517-373-9900.
Non-resident motor vehicles must still display a valid Non-Resident Recreation Passport ($29 annual; $8 daily) to enter a Michigan state park, recreation area or state-administered boating access fee site. They can be purchased at any state park or recreation area, or through the Michigan e-Store at www.michigan.gov/estore.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state’s natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. For more information, go to www.michigan.gov/dnr.
