Michigan state parks news - February 2024

Many state parks are getting a facelift; some closures in place

It’s an exciting time for our state parks and we can’t wait for you to see the end results!

Thanks to a massive $250 million investment made possible through the American Rescue Plan Act, many Michigan state parks, trails and other outdoor spaces are receiving some much-needed TLC. New roads and parking lots, upgraded electrical and water systems, new accessible toilet buildings, new water jug fillers and trail enhancements are just a few examples of the type of monumental work taking place across the state.

While some locations will temporarily close for improvements, most remain open for your next outdoor adventure. If your favorite park is getting a facelift as part of these important investments, consider trying out a different spot and explore a new-to-you destination!

For the latest information on DNR trail and other facility closures, please visit Michigan.gov/DNRClosures. The information is updated almost daily.

Twice a year, residents and out-of-state visitors can enjoy world-class fishing on two back-to-back days without a fishing license. All other regulations apply.

Why not add a few state parks to your Free Fishing Weekend itinerary? We also waive the regular Recreation Passport entry fee to all 103 state parks and 1,000-plus DNR-managed boating access sites.

As always, check out Michigan.gov/IceSafety before any on-ice activities.

Gear up and get moving! Two unique 5Ks coming up

Celebrating trees is part of two upcoming 5K run/walk events organized by the DNR.

First up: the March 23 Lumberjack Pancake Run, which takes place along the Dequindre Cut Greenway in Detroit and honors Michigan’s lumber history. You'll receive a custom medal, lumberjack buff, Outdoor Adventure Center entry and a pancake breakfast. Wear your best flannel apparel or sport you best lumberjack beard.

Later this spring, take part in the April 22-26 Run for the Trees: Happy Little (Virtual) 5K, an event that has expanded from Michigan to include tree-planting efforts in nine other states. In addition to a T-shirt, medal and bib, you'll receive a happy little sticker as a thank-you for your continued support of tree plantings. Race packets will start shipping March 1.
