Update on fiberglass boat recycling effort
You’re receiving this because you shared your fiberglass boat recycling information with us, a team of boat recycling enthusiasts representing several different Michigan organizations, including the Department of Natural Resources.
This is an exciting time! We're working toward a long-term fiberglass recycling solution in Michigan, and watching a potential new industry emerge that has the potential to create jobs, position Michigan as a leader in sustainable boating and help provide solutions to a national issue!
Here’s where we are:
We have two Michigan-based companies testing equipment to chop and shred boats to help determine a cost per foot, while also identifying best practices for environmental and staff safety. Additional businesses are testing ways to reuse the fiberglass in new products.
What’s next?
Thanks to the information you shared, we identified a few significant challenges:
-
Determining ownership. Some people have boats on their property, but either have no paperwork to show ownership or informed us the VIN has been removed. Our team is working with law enforcement to create a simple process for recognizing a boat has reached the end of its useful life and therefore is eligible for recycling.
-
"Dead" boat transportation. With so many boats hidden in back lots, in the woods or partially submerged in water, removing them will be a challenge. We are actively seeking entrepreneurs who may want to consider this as an investment opportunity. Interested? Email Maia Turek.
-
Funding. Recycling boats will have a cost and the team is trying to determine a funding model.
How can you help?
We need to hear from you – boater and boat holders – on what you feel is the best way to fund this initiative with this quick online survey. It should take less than five minutes. Your continued input will help shape the future of boat recycling.
We’re also looking for a few people to interview on their thoughts about boat recycling for an upcoming story, specifically someone located between Traverse City and Muskegon. Please email Maia Turek or call or 989-225-8573.
