Those interested in long-term planning for Fort Custer Recreation Area in Kalamazoo County are invited to a virtual public meeting 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30.

At the meeting, Michigan Department of Natural Resources staff will present an overview of the new draft phase 2 general management plan, proposed improvements and planning process, followed by an opportunity for people to ask questions. Advance registration is required.

The DNR uses general management plans to define a long-range planning and management strategy that protects a state park’s resources while addressing recreation and education needs and opportunities.

Post-meeting survey and recording, project website

An online public input survey – open through Sept. 11 – will be available immediately following the meeting. The meeting will be recorded and posted online approximately one week after the event.

Visit Michigan.gov/FortCuster to find general management planning resources and a link to the pre-registration form, the draft plan, public input survey and meeting recording.

Fort Custer Recreation Area features three lakes, the Kalamazoo River, a designated swimming beach, modern and equestrian campgrounds, rustic cabins, more than 40 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails, and hunting and fishing opportunities. The area is managed for ongoing ecological restoration, including prairie planting, invasive plant control and prescribed fire. The land that makes up the park was part of the Fort Custer Military Reservation and was transferred from the U.S. government in the early 1970s, following operation for recreation by the state under a lease agreement beginning in 1957.

Additional information on the DNR’s general management plan process is available at Michigan.gov/ParkManagementPlans.
