A late antlerless firearm hunt on private land south of Highway M-32 in Alpena County will take place Jan. 6-9 and Jan. 13-16 to provide an additional opportunity for deer management in the state’s bovine tuberculosis area.
Increased antlerless harvest is important to reducing the number of deer frequenting farms and helps to limit the number of infected wildlife and cattle herds in the future. This hunt is being held in accordance with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Hunters can harvest antlerless deer with an unused 2021 deer or deer combo hunting license, a universal antlerless deer hunting license or an antlerless license to hunt in Deer Management Unit 487. Additional tags can be purchased at any DNR license agent through Jan. 16.
Private properties in the hunt area are available for the public to use free of charge through the Hunting Access Program. Enrolled properties can be viewed at Michigan.gov/HAP.
Successful hunters can submit their deer heads for bovine tuberculosis testing at any of the 24-hour, self-service drop boxes available throughout the region. A smartphone is required to use the drop boxes. The Alpena and Atlanta DNR deer check stations will be open on a limited schedule. Check station hours and drop box locations can be found at Michigan.gov/DeerCheck.
