"... it's about what's good for the second and third generations down the line that we're going to leave Michigan to."
Those words are from David Hales, Michigan Department of Natural Resources director from May 1988 through May 1991. He joined several fellow directors, past and present, for a special DNR centennial anniversary video to share insights and memories about all that goes into the care, conservation and continuity of our state's abundant natural and cultural resources.
The video includes vintage footage of foresters, park rangers, conservation officers, fisheries technicians and many other DNR staff doing the day-to-day work of protecting and managing the fish, forests, wildlife, parks and visitor experiences that are uniquely Michigan.
"Much more now, it's so important for us to seek ways where we're reaching out and we're actively connecting people with green space and opportunity to find nature wherever they happen to be in the state," said Dan Eichinger, current DNR director.
That's what the DNR's centennial year has been about: acknowledging the hard work and vision that came from generations before, telling the conservation story, honoring the resources with thoughtful planning, and helping residents and visitors enjoy every opportunity to explore, unwind and learn.
