DNR, partners battle 130-acre wildfire at Camp Grayling

Firefighters are wrapping up tonight after a wildfire burned across an estimated 130 acres on state land leased by Camp Grayling in Crawford County.

The fire burned an area off of Wakely Bridge Road, south of Bucks East-West truck trail.

Camp Grayling’s fire staff and Michigan Department of Natural Resources firefighters were assisted by local fire departments. A DNR incident management team was activated about 4:45 p.m. Camp Grayling used a Type 2 helicopter for water drops. The U.S. Forest Service provided a Type 1 helicopter and two Fire Boss water tanker aircraft; a DNR fixed-wing oversight plane also was used.

No structures were threatened and no evacuations occurred.

DNR and Camp Grayling crews are expected to be mopping up for several days, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Camp Grayling is hosting training for National Guard units from Michigan and Illinois this week.

Drought conditions are present in many areas of Michigan, resulting in increased wildfire risk. Check Michigan.gov/BurnPermit before burning brush and leaves. Use caution when burning, and keep a shovel and water source nearby.

Fully extinguish all fires with water when done, and never leave a fire unattended, even for a moment. Find fire safety tips at Michigan.gov/PreventWildfires
