 A series of virtual events is scheduled to share resources and inspiration this coming Environmental Education Week, April 19-23. Presentations will cover community science tools, classroom activities and other environmental education topics for teachers and parents.  The DNR has reached 100 years old! A century ago, Michigan looked very different. Game species and habitat were declining and lumbered-out forests weren't being replanted. The conservation movement was just getting started, prompting the establishment of the Michigan Department of Conservation, the precursor to the DNR, to protect our state's natural resources.
Today's Michigan Department of Natural Resources has celebrated milestones such as restoring wild elk, turkeys and the Kirtland's Warbler, and planting trees across the nearly 4 million-acre state forest system.
DNR staffers have created a webpage at Michigan.gov/DNRCentennial to highlight the department’s efforts and share 100 ways to celebrate the centennial.
Urban forester Brian Colter of Grosse Pointe Park recently received the 2020 Honors Award from the International Society of Arboriculture. The annual award recognizes a certified arborist for their success in the field. Colter has exemplified a dedication to environmentally sustainable practices and helped Grosse Pointe Park achieve 27 Tree City USA designations and 13 growth awards. Colter also developed a wood reutilization program, where removed trees are reused to make park benches and hardwood floors.

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. is launching a partnership to develop a new SFI Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard for application in North America and potentially globally. SFI will collaborate with five urban forestry leaders: American Forests, Arbor Day Foundation, the International Society of Arboriculture, the Society of Municipal Arborists and Tree Canada.  ISA Michigan and Michigan State University have partnered on a new training program to teach tree care skills in topic areas including ground work, climbing and aerial lift and rescue. Courses will be held at Muskegon Community College. Learn more and register online; classes begin April 9.
