Project Rustic hits the road to enhance rustic camping info

Meet Paige, a Huron Pines AmeriCorps member serving with the DNR, who is embarking on a statewide tour of Michigan's rustic state forest campgrounds.

Paige came up with the Project Rustic concept during her first AmeriCorps service term. She suggested that the best way to interpret these rustic destinations for future travelers is to experience them firsthand. Throughout her five-month tour in a recreational vehicle provided by General RV, she will snap photos, gather site information and collect GPS and GIS data for improved mapping of the campgrounds and associated trails.

Follow Paige on the Project Rustic page, where she will be sharing tips and tricks for traveling rustic and more.

A century of natural resources: The DNR turns 100 years

The DNR has officially turned 100 years old! On March 30, 1921, the Michigan Department of Conservation, the precursor to the DNR was created.

“This centennial marks a tremendous milestone for Michigan,” said DNR Director Dan Eichinger. “It’s a benchmark we can all be proud of, celebrating the work of countless men and women dedicated to ensuring our state’s spectacular natural resources and recreation opportunities are available today and tomorrow.”

Throughout 2021, you're invited to help celebrate and commemorate this milestone. Visit Michigan.gov/DNRCentennial to check out the "100 Ways to Celebrate" list, an interactive timeline, centennial merchandise and more.

TalkSooner app – make crucial conversations feel more 'natural'

Teen substance use remains one of the most critical issues impacting families and communities, and has only been compounded by the pandemic.

Prevention is at the core of building stronger, healthier children and teens, which is why the TalkSooner app was developed. This free online prevention resource includes tips on “having the drug talk” and other dynamic resources.

We are happy to team up with TalkSooner.org, so we can highlight the outdoors as a more "natural" environment to start these conversations. Relax at a state park, hike or ride a trail or take out the boat. Download the app, pick your destination and make a difference!
