High water prompts temporary closure of Lake Macatawa boating access site
The Lake Macatawa boating access site, located in Ottawa County about one mile east of Holland State Park at 1812 Ottawa Beach Road in Holland, will temporarily close Thursday, July 23 due to issues related to high water.
Department of Natural Resources parks and recreation staff will closely monitor the boating access site, which will remain closed until water recedes. Water is currently covering courtesy piers, creating unsafe conditions.
There are three alternative boating access sites that provide access to Lake Macatawa or Lake Michigan, including:
- Howard B. Dunton Park boat launch, located on the northeast side of Lake Macatawa at 290 Howard Ave. in Holland. It's operated by Holland Charter Township.
- Kollen Park boat launch, located on the southeast side of Lake Macatawa at 250 Kollen Park Drive in Holland. It's operated by the City of Holland.
- Pigeon Lake boating access site, which provides access to Lake Michigan and is located approximately 10 miles north of the park at 7485 Lakeshore Drive in West Olive (Port Sheldon Township). It's operated by the DNR.
Several state parks and harbors are experiencing issues due to record-high water levels. These unprecedented water levels are taking a toll on infrastructure across the state as flooding and erosion threaten shorelines, rivers and inland lakes. Anyone planning to visit the Lake Macatawa boating access site is encouraged to first visit Michigan.gov/DNRClosures to view any updates on the anticipated opening date as well as other closures and trail detours in DNR facilities.
