State welcomes new Pure Michigan Trails and Trail Towns

Bridge along the Kal Haven Trail

Three trails and three communities recently were recognized as Pure Michigan Trails and Trail Towns, accolades annually given to places that offer some of Michigan's best trail experiences.

Pure Michigan Trails are considered significant scenic resources at the national, state or regional level and capture the natural essence of Michigan. Pure Michigan Trail Towns are identified as vibrant places that showcase the state's scenery and capture the community’s character, heritage and charm.

Volunteer logs 2,000 hours in the name of stewardship

Wayne Gleiber standing outdoors

Meet Wayne Gleiber – a DNR Parks and Recreation Division star volunteer who has logged 2,000 volunteer hours since 2003.

Wayne not only participates in volunteer stewardship workdays, but he independently leads around 100 workdays each year at Warren Dunes and Grand Mere state parks!

Each month, throughout many state parks in southern lower Michigan, volunteers roll up their sleeves during volunteer stewardship workdays to help clear out invasive shrubs, plant seeds and restore unique natural areas. Since 2003, volunteer stewards in the volunteer stewardship program have accomplished more than 111,500 hours of volunteer work valued at more than $4 million.

DNR announces two Free ORV Wekeends

Two ORVs riding on trail

Each year, the DNR holds two Free ORV Weekends so you can test Michigan's off-road trails or introduce friends to the ORV trail system. Mark you calendar – the dates are set for June 13-14 and Aug. 15-16.

Twice a year, residents and nonresidents legally can ride nearly 3,800 miles of off-road trails and the state’s five scramble areas without purchasing an ORV license or trail permit. All other ORV rules and laws still apply.

Learn about Free ORV Weekends at Michigan.gov/ORVInfo.

Slip into summer planning with harbor reservations

Lexington State Harbor

It's easy to understand why Michigan is known as the Great Lakes State. Michigan not only boasts the longest U.S. freshwater coastline, but it's home to 82 state-sponsored harbors and endless fishing opportunities.

Planning your day or overnight trip is easy. You can bookmark the DNR's 'Boating the Great Lakes' page for easy access to the digital harbor guide, including harbor locations, amenities, reservation info and more. Additionally, there is an online map that shows which harbors take online reservations and which ones accept reservations by calling the harbor directly.

Please note that watercraft, unless exempt, must be registered with the Michigan Secretary of State. Registrations expire March 31 in the third year of issuance
