Leelanau State Park's new accessible playground will officially open to the public at a ribbon-cutting Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Both the public and media representatives are invited to see the playground firsthand and hear about the development of the project. The event will start at 11 a.m. at the park, 15310 N. Lighthouse Point Road in Northport.

The event will help commemorate the completion of the project and the massive volunteer effort that went into raising funds and building the structure.

The park's newest accessible amenity – a design element that's a part of all new state park playground projects – features two slides, a log balance beam, a crow's nest and trapeze rings, to highlight just a few components. The playground sits on a rubberized surface that makes access easier for persons of all mobility levels.

This project was made possible through a community fundraising effort spearheaded by the Friends of Leelanau State Park and a community build accomplished with the help of Michigan Cares for Tourism's all-volunteer workforce.

The park, located at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, is home to 1,300 scenic acres, a rustic campground, hiking and cross-country ski trails and the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum, where visitors can walk through the restored keeper’s dwelling and climb the tower for spectacular views of Lake Michigan.
