Ladies’ pheasant hunt – Oct. 20

Join us Sunday, Oct. 20, for a ladies’ pheasant hunt at the Pine Hill Sportsman’s Club in Belding. This event, hosted by the Michigan DNR, Pine Hill Kennels and Sportsman's Club, and the Grand Valley chapter of Pheasants Forever, is open to women interested in learning how to hunt pheasants. Beginners are welcome!

The day's events will include shooting practice with clay pigeons on the skeet range, a guided hunt for three pheasants, a field-dressing lesson and a gourmet lunch. Participants should dress for the weather, wear hunter orange and bring target and hunting ammunition as well as a hunting shotgun. A shotgun also can be provided if needed. Please let us know ahead of time if you will need one.

Trained guides and staff will assist hunters throughout the day to make the experience safe and enjoyable. Registration is limited to 12 ladies, 18 years of age or older. The cost for the day is $45 per person. Registration and coffee begin at 9 a.m.

Preregistration is required. Please call Scott Brosier at 616-874-8459 to sign up.

Joe Johnson Memorial Youth Pheasant Hunt – Oct. 26

The third annual Joe Johnson Memorial Youth Pheasant hunt will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Gordon Guyer-Augusta Creek State Wildlife Area in Kalamazoo County.

Youth hunters, ages 10-16, who are hunter safety certified and have a Michigan base license, are welcome to join us for a free guided pheasant hunt. Groups of two will hunt with a guide, dog and dog handler. A free lunch will be provided at noon at McCrary Hall in Hickory Corners.

This pheasant hunt is held in honor of a true conservationist, Joe Johnson, director of the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary from 1985-2007 and a leader in many conservation efforts.

A mandatory orientation and safety training will begin at 7:45 a.m., and the hunts will take place from 8 a.m. to noon. Please arrive at the intersection of East C Avenue and North 43rd Street within the Gordon Guyer-Augusta Creek State Wildlife Area prior to the orientation. Due to construction on the C Avenue bridge, please enter the intersection from the west side.

A special thank you to our partners in conservation, Rustic Ridge Hunt Club, Kellogg Biological Center, Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, Ducks Unlimited, Ruffed Grouse Society, and Pheasants Forever, for their contributions to the event.
