Help inventory plants and wildlife Sept. 5

Your help is needed to inventory plant and wildlife species on a portion of land at Crow Island State Game Area in Saginaw County Thursday, Sept. 5, beginning at 8 a.m. All skill levels are welcome.

The purpose of this inventory is to evaluate the effectiveness of previous habitat work (brush pile creation and invasive species removal) and to inform future management decisions in the high-voltage power line corridor operated by ITC.

ITC is partnering with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Wildlife Habitat Council and the National Wild Turkey Federation to enhance wildlife habitat within and adjacent to ITC’s high-voltage electricity transmission corridor crossing Crow Island.

ITC has implemented woody invasive species control measures at four areas at Crow Island (portions of the Stork, East, Panko and Baldpate Units), totaling approximately 100 acres, as part of its vegetation management program. Some of the cut woody material was utilized to create brush rows and piles for wildlife habitat.

Staff from the DNR and ITC, along with ecologists from Environmental Consulting and Technology, Inc., will use field guides and reference materials to assist with plant and wildlife identification.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the pump house, located at 2262-2256 Bay City Road in Saginaw. Look for the gravel road pull-off on the east side of Bay City Road, just south of the ITC power line corridor.

You should bring binoculars, hand lenses, your favorite field guide, lunch and a water bottle. Dress for the weather, wear long jeans or work pants and boots, as the ground may be wet in some areas.

Volunteers will be asked to sign a volunteer waiver before beginning work, and those under 18 will need to have a parent or guardian signature.
