Experience the magic of campfire storytelling
As part of the Michigan state parks centennial, we are hosting storytelling events where you'll hear seasoned storytellers share their personal park tales.
At a recent event in Lansing, Alexis Horton, the DNR's diversity, equity and inclusion officer, shared her memory about introducing students who'd never camped before to the camaraderie of making s'mores and time outdoors.
Upcoming events take place July 20 at Van Riper State Park in Champion, Aug. 17 in Metro Detroit (location TBA) and Sept. 21 at Yankee Springs Recreation Area in Middleville. Listen to Alexis' story, find information on upcoming dates and find future podcasts.

On May 12, 1919, the Michigan Legislature established the Michigan State Park Commission, paving the way for Michigan's state parks system. Fast forward to today and Michigan is home to 103 state parks, as well as the many natural assets, campgrounds, boat launches, swimming beaches, trails and lighthouses found in those parks. The centennial is a nod to our rich history and an energizing look forward, and we're marking this milestone year with special events, podcasts, historical stories, videos, geocaching and lots more.
