William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor will open early to accommodate spring walleye run

Milliken harbor

Each spring, an estimated 3.5 million-plus walleye push up the Detroit River to spawn from Lake Erie.

To better accommodate boaters who want to experience the spring walleye run, William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor along the Detroit riverfront is preparing to open a month early.

April 1-30, it costs $200 to reserve a harbor slip for the month, or $20 per day. Due to the early opening, amenities typically available during the regular season will not be available. The fee covers only the cost of docking vessels. No trailers will be allowed in the parking lot.

To reserve one of 52 slips, boaters are asked to register at the harbor office Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or use the self-registration box located in front of the office.

Seasonal boaters will begin arriving May 1, so this early season extends only through April 30. To make reservations during the harbor's regular season, May 1 to Nov. 1, visit MiDNRReservations.com..

William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor is located on the Detroit River, along the City's Detroit RiverWalk, just east of downtown near the Outdoor Adventure Center, Belle Isle Park and many other attractions. During the summer season, the park's 52-slip harbor provides showers, a laundry facility, grills, picnic tables and ice for purchase.
