Get ready for turkey hunting, walleye fishing seasons with DNR Outdoor Skills Academy classes

The Department of Natural Resources Outdoor Skills Academy offers opportunities to learn more about turkey hunting and walleye fishing with upcoming classes at the Carl T. Johnson Hunt and Fish Center in Cadillac.

Turkey Hunting Clinic – Saturday, April 13

male and female hunters with turkey

Running 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., this introduction to turkey hunting will cover law, habitat, gear, calling and much more. Students will walk away with the knowledge they need to hunt turkeys on their own. The class will include both indoor and outdoor sessions, so participants are asked to dress for the weather.

Cost is $30, which includes lunch and door prizes. Participation is limited to 50 students. Register online for the turkey hunting clinic.

Walleye Fishing Clinic – Sunday, April 14

This class, which runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will cover how Outdoor Skills Academy pro-staffers Steve Berry, Matt Peterson and representatives from Fishbone Custom Lures spend their days chasing trophy walleye – everything from which rod and reel to use to how to use electronics. DNR staff members will be on hand to answer rules and regulations questions. For those interested in having their catch mounted, the clinic also will offer tips from a master taxidermist on how to care for trophy fish.

Cost is $20. Participation is limited to 50 students. Register online for the walleye fishing clinic.
