Beat the winter blues with some wintertime hunting and trapping.


Small game hunting

  • Cottontail rabbit and snowshoe hare season is open statewide through March 31.
  • Squirrel hunting season, for both fox and gray squirrels, is open statewide through March 31.

Waterfowl hunting

South Zone:

  • Dark and light goose season is open Jan. 26 – Feb. 11.

Allegan County Goose Management Unit (GMU):

  • Dark and light goose season is open through Feb. 14.
  • The Fennville Farm Unit of the Allegan State Game Area is closed to goose hunting on Mondays and Wednesdays during the GMU season.

Furbearer hunting and trapping

  • Coyote, gray and red fox, muskrat and mink trapping seasons are open through March 1, statewide.
  • Coyote hunting season is open year-round and fox (gray and red) hunting is open through March 1, statewide.
  • Raccoon trapping season is open through March 31, statewide. Raccoon hunting season is open through Jan. 31, statewide.
  • Beaver and otter trapping seasons vary based on unit and residency status. (See page 30 of the Fur Harvester Digest.)
  • Bobcat hunting season opens Jan. 1. Bobcat trapping season dates vary based on which unit you are trapping in. Please note: bobcat kill tags had to be obtained prior to Nov. 30, 2018, in order to hunt or trap for the 2018/2019 season. See pages 28-29 of the Fur Harvester Digest for bobcat harvest regulations.
  • Badger trapping season is open to Michigan residents in Zone 3 through March 1. The limit is one per resident fur harvester.

Deer hunting

  • Urban deer management archery season is Jan. 1-31 in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties.
    • This hunt is open on both public and private lands; however, not all public lands are open to hunting. Many cities and townships in these counties have ordinances prohibiting hunting. Some cities and townships may have established special hunt opportunities in public parks and open spaces. Contact your city government to see if special hunting opportunities exist for this archery hunt.
    • A deer license, deer combo license or antlerless deer license are valid during this extended season. All archery season rules apply.

Spring turkey applications

Spring turkey hunting applications are on sale Jan. 1 – Feb. 1. Applications are $5 and can be purchased online at michigan.gov/turkey or at a license agent. Don’t miss the chance to pick your early turkey hunt this spring!
