Stepping forward into 2019

Dec. 28, 2018

Thank you

As this exciting year closes, we at the Office of the Great Lakes want to thank our federal, state and community partners for supporting the work we do to protect and manage the Great Lakes. We would also like to thank the community members that subscribe to our updates, support restoration efforts, volunteer their time, and share our love for water. We welcome input and can be reached by contacting outreach coordinator Rachel Coale.

Reflecting on 2018

In 2018, the OGL accomplished goals to increase outreach, restore impacted waters and support Great Lakes communities in water management, sustainability and collaboration.

The office launched a new website and branched out to social media with a Twitter account, sharing information to the Great Lakes region and beyond. With the support of partners, the Water Heritage Project and Smithsonian’s Water/Ways Exhibit are traveling to Michigan communities, encouraging stewardship of our freshwater resources.

All management actions were completed to restore historical environmental impacts to the Menominee River, the Saginaw Bay Fish Reef restoration project started and strides were made in implementing Michigan Water Strategy goals.

In addition, the OGL worked in communities to protect coastal resources, helped establish an alliance of Great Lakes island communities and facilitated the development of shared harbor visions in waterfront communities.

This work matters. We are proud to make a difference in Michigan’s Great Lakes ecosystems and communities.

Looking Ahead

In 2019, the OGL will continue our work to support healthy aquatic ecosystems, prevent introductions of aquatic invasive species and collaborate with partners. We will support vibrant Great Lakes communities and work to build a culture of care and stewardship for our waters.

We look forward to strong partnerships and continued success in 2019.

With sincere thanks and best wishes for a joyful holiday season,

Everyone at the Michigan Office of the Great Lakes
