Each
year, thousands of people travel hundreds of miles to attend the National
Trappers Association Convention and Outdoor Show.
This
year’s July 26-28 event at the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds in Escanaba will
feature two very special guests, worth leaving home for – world-famous celebrities
Marty Meierotto from Alaska and Tom Miranda from
Florida.
If you
are a “Marty fan” this is your chance to meet one of Alaska’s toughest trappers
and mountain men, along with his wife and daughter. If you are not yet a fan,
you probably will be after you learn more about this man who headed to Alaska
with his brother in 1985 to “live in the woods.”
Not only is
Marty a television star in the History Channel’s “Mountain Men,” he has also
appeared on the cover of “Field and Stream” magazine. He is also one of
Alaska’s better trappers, owns and pilots his own plane, works as an Alaskan
smoke jumper, and spends most of his time 200 miles from civilization – without
electricity and few modern conveniences – if you don’t count his plane and
snowmobiles.
Marty and his wife and daughter will be at the U.P. Trapper’s Association booth in the Beef Barn every morning during the convention, so fans can get a chance to meet Marty and his family. For those willing to come to Escanaba a couple of days before the convention starts, and spend $50 on a banquet ticket, they will have an opportunity to meet Marty and his family on a more personal basis at a special banquet.
The banquet will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24 in the Miracle of Life Building at the fairgrounds. Only 150 tickets will be sold.
 In
addition to Marty Meierotto, among the many skilled and accomplished trappers and outdoor experts
attending the trappers’ convention will be world-famous bow hunter, Tom
Miranda.
Miranda’s
love of the outdoors is evident through all his countless accomplishments. From capturing mink, raccoons and muskrats as
a lad in Ohio to winning Safari Club International’s prestigious World Hunting
Award (issued for the harvest of 50 animals over five continents), Miranda’s
life has been dedicated to outdoors sports.
He has
written seven books and produced over 60 videos on trapping and hunting. He spent
20 seasons producing The Outdoor
Adventure Magazine TV show, which aired on ESPN. Currently, Tom is seen on
the Outdoor Channel’s series Territories
Wild. He has taken over 60
whitetails on video while archery hunting and accomplished the Super Slam on
North American big game.
Miranda
plans to conduct two seminars during the convention, one about how he started
out as a trapper and how his love for the outdoors, hard work, and
determination resulted in his becoming a well-known outdoorsman. The seminars
are titled “You Make Your Own Luck: The Tom Miranda Story” and "How
Trapping Made me a Better Bow Hunter.”
