Learn to identify spring wildflowers with a class at Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center, located in Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon, on Saturday, May 5.

Taught by naturalist/nature photographer Craig Elston and park naturalist Elizabeth Tillman – who both have a wealth of knowledge about native plants – this DNR Outdoor Skills Academy class will cover basic plant identification, particularly as it relates to spring wildflowers, as well as information on dune systems. In the indoor session, you’ll learn to identify key plant features using photo examples.

We will also take short hikes to visit various park locations to see and identify flowering plants. Winter may be hanging on a little longer than expected, but don’t worry – we will get outside, and there will be plant species to view. While some won’t be in bloom yet, it will be an excellent opportunity to learn leaf identification.

Cost is $40, which includes lunch and all materials. You’ll receive a field guide and other identification materials, and everyone will have the chance to win a raffle basket.

With Mother’s Day around the corner, the class would make a great gift for a mom who might want to learn more about native wildflowers.
