DNR offers steelhead, fly-fishing, turkey hunting clinics, wildlife photography workshop in Cadillac

As part of its Outdoor Skills Academy, the Department of Natural Resources will offer opportunities to learn more about steelhead and fly fishing, turkey hunting and wildlife photography with upcoming classes at the Carl T. Johnson Hunt and Fish Center in Cadillac, Michigan.

Steelhead Clinic

Saturdays, March 24 and April 7

Starting at 10 a.m. and running about seven hours, this class will feature Outdoor Skills Academy pro-staff covering various strategies and techniques for chasing Michigan’s “chrome torpedoes.” Feel free to bring your own gear, if possible, or for those new to steelheading, some equipment will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The classroom portion of the clinic will be at the Carl T. Johnson Center, and then Sunday morning the class will hit the water for instructors to show students how to fish and what to look for on the beautiful Manistee River.

The cost for this class is $40, which includes lunch, some tackle and instruction. Register online for the March 24 Steelhead Clinic or the April 7 Steelhead Clinic.

Turkey Hunting Clinic

Saturday, March 31

Starting at 10 a.m., this “A to Z” class on how to hunt wild turkeys will cover everything you need to know to get started, including how to find a location, scouting, calling and gear to use.

The cost for this class is $25 and will include lunch. Register online for the Turkey Hunting Clinic.

Wildlife Photography Workshop by Tom Haxby

Saturday and Sunday, May 12-13

Learn how to shoot better photos from world-renowned photographer Tom Haxby. This two-day class – from 10 a.m. to dusk Saturday and from daybreak to 2 p.m. Sunday – will include both classroom and field experience and will cover how to set up your camera and shoot and edit photos. 

The class will start by going over equipment and setting up your camera. Participants will then hit the road and take to the field to take photos of wildflowers and other wildlife they may come across. Attendees are asked to bring their own cameras and laptops.

Fly-Fishing Clinic

Sunday, May 20

This class, for fly-fishing beginners, starts at 10 a.m. The DNR Outdoor Skills Academy pro-staff will cover the basics of fly-fishing, including demonstrations and instruction for various fly casts and for fly selection based on target species. The classroom session will run until 2 p.m., and then participants will move outside to the canal for the hands-on portion of the class.

Cost for the class is $25. Register online for the Fly-Fishing Clinic.

The Carl T. Johnson Hunt and Fish Center is located in Mitchell State Park, at 6093 E. M-115 in Cadillac. A Recreation Passport is required for entry into the park.
