Results of walleye population estimate on Hubbard Lake
The DNR has completed a number of walleye population estimates across Michigan lakes for many years, but most of the time they’re done on lakes in tribal waters. Recently the Northern Lake Huron Management Unit decided to conduct an estimate on a gem of a waterbody, Hubbard Lake in Alcona County.

Angler creel surveys provide more insight into fishing opportunities in Sand & Wamplers lakes
From April through October 2017 the DNR conducted an angler creel survey at Sand Lake in Lenawee County and at Wamplers Lake in Jackson/Lenawee counties. A clerk stationed at those locations counted and interviewed anglers several days each week and then estimates of catch and effort were calculated for the entire survey period based on the information collected.

Sunday Lake in Gogebic County is a fairly shallow impounded body of water, created for water use back in the days of mining. Located in the village of Wakefield, it’s accessible to all types of recreators. Today more and more canoers and kayakers flock to Sunday Lake to fish or to take advantage of the various other amenities.

In the July 2016 edition of Reel in Michigan’s Fisheries an emerging fishery on Lake Huron was profiled – Atlantic salmon. The story touted how the species’ reputation in that lake was growing day-by-day and the value of knowing how to properly identify these fish.
