Chinook Salmon Population in Lake Michigan
The salmon population in Lake Michigan showed signs of better
balance with the available prey. The size of fish was larger this year with
some fish exceeding 40 pounds.
This increase in size of fish can be attributed to a couple
of factors:
- Chinook salmon numbers are down from stocking reductions and
natural reproduction was down a couple of years due to harsh winters.
- There are now successful spawning events for alewife, an
important prey fish that occurred in 2012, 2015, and 2016. Therefore, there is
more food available for Chinook salmon.

the DNR Salmon Page.
