Walker Tavern welcomes fall, says farewell to summer with special outdoor activities Sept. 9
As summer turns into fall, visitors can enjoy both seasons in a single day of outdoor activities at Walker Tavern Historic Site near Brooklyn, Michigan. Saturday, Sept. 9, Walker Tavern hosts two favorite seasonal activities – a fall trail walk and a summer baseball game.
An hourlong guided trail walk kicks off the day, with walkers gathering at Hewitt House at 10:30 a.m. All ages are welcome; weather-appropriate clothing and footwear are recommended. The one-third-mile trail will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for self-guided walks.
At 1 p.m., visitors can sit back and enjoy baseball as it was played 150 years ago. In the summer's last home game of vintage "base ball," the Walker Wheels square off against the Bay City Independents, using 1860s rules, uniforms and standards of gentlemanly conduct. Visitors can bring lawn chairs and picnic lunches to settle in for the game.
"Being outdoors is so healthful and fun," said Walker Tavern Historic Site historian Laurie Perkins. "We are keeping our fingers crossed for good weather, but rain or shine, two of our historic buildings will be open for visitors to discover this site’s history."
