DNR to host open house July 13 on proposed playground at Grand Haven State Park

Grand Haven playground renderingThe Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host a public open house Thursday, July 13, to share information on the proposed playground at Grand Haven State Park in Ottawa County. The open house will run 3 to 6 p.m. at the park headquarters building, located at 1001 Harbor Ave. in Grand Haven.

The new playground will be located adjacent to the modern campground and will be open to all visitors, including campers and day-use visitors. There is another playground located near the beach, so the new structure will help alleviate the strong demand for playground use at the park.

At the July 13 open house, DNR staff will review plans for the proposed playground, answer questions and gather public input on the proposed plan and possible future phases. The proposed playground plans will be on display. People are welcome to attend at any time during the three-hour open house.

This playground is the first of three 2017 Playground Initiative projects in state parks. The initiative includes a community build and a partnership between friends groups, mParks and Carter's Kids. This particular project is partially funded through a donation from the Grand Haven State Park Friends Group and funds from the sale of the Recreation Passport.

Grand Haven State Park is a 48-acre park with the beautiful sandy shore of Lake Michigan along the west side of the park and the Grand River along the north side of the park. The park consists entirely of beach sand and provides scenic views of Lake Michigan and the Grand Haven pier and lighthouse. Visit michigan.gov/grandhaven for more information.

For more information about the project, contact Joe Strach, regional field planner for the DNR, at strachj@michigan.gov or 517-284-4746. Persons with disabilities who need accommodations for the meeting should contact Strach at least five business days before the meeting.
