Vehicle access restricted to Lake Skegemog boating access site due to county road reconstruction; Baggs Road limited to local traffic only

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has announced that the Kalkaska County Road Commission will reconstruct Baggs Road, located off of M-72 between Williamsburg and Kalkaska, in Kalkaska County. Road construction will limit vehicles to local-only traffic, and as a result, vehicle access to the Lake Skegemog boating access site will be limited. The project will begin July 1 and is slated to take 90 days to complete.

The DNR encourages boaters to use one of two alternative boating access sites that also provide boating access to Lake Skegemog through the chain of lakes, including:

• The Elk Lake Road boating access site is located west of Lake Skegemog in Whitewater Township in Grand Traverse County. Whitewater Township requires a $5 launch fee.
  
  
• The Torch River boating access site is located off of Aarwood Road north of Lake Skegemog in Clearwater Township in Kalkaska County. There is no launch fee.

Updates on the anticipated opening date for the Lake Skegemog can be found at www.michigan.gov/dnrclosures. Additional information on closures and trail detours in other DNR facilities, including state trails, boat launches, parks and campgrounds, also are listed on this page.

Boaters help fund more than 1,300 public boating access sites and 82 harbors in Michigan. All watercraft, unless exempt, must be registered with the Michigan Secretary of the State. Register all watercraft online, by mail or in person at the Secretary of State. Boat registrations expire March 31 in the third year of issuance. Learn more at www.michigan.gov/boating.
