Bridge replacement to affect Lincoln Hills-area trails following Memorial Day holiday

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced that the bridge that services the Lincoln Hills ORV route, Snowmobile Trail #35 and the Silver Creek Pathway in Lake County will be closed following the Memorial Day holiday. The bridge will close Wednesday, May 31, so that trail users will not be affected over the holiday weekend. The new bridge is scheduled to open prior to the Fourth of July holiday.

The current bridge structure is deteriorating and is not wide enough to accommodate all ORV types. The new, user-friendly bridge will be widened to 72 inches and will allow enough room for side-by-side ORVs.

"The closure includes a small portion of the trail, which is approximately one-half mile in length," said Todd Neiss, trails specialist with the DNR. "The surrounding county roads in Lake County are open to ORVs and provide easy access around the bridge closure. Riders will still be able to enjoy the trails throughout the month of June, until the new structure is open in early July."

An alternative route will be signed and will utilize State Road, West 8 Mile Road and Gopher Run Road. Access to the Lincoln Hills State Forest Campground and boat launch will remain open. All three trails will remain open; however, access across the Pine River will be closed during construction. The surrounding Lake County roads are also open to ORV use and available as an alternate route. Maps of Lake Country trail are available at lakecotrails.com/maps.

The ORV Trail Improvement Fund, which is generated through the sale of ORV licenses and permits, was used for the bridge project. The ORV Trail Improvement Funds are reinvested back into the ORV system and help fund trail expansion, maintenance and infrastructure improvements.
