Suzanne Fischer joins Michigan History Center

Suzanne Fischer The Michigan History Center welcomed Suzanne Fischer as the new director of the Michigan History Museum System last week.

“Dr. Fischer takes over the center’s museum program at an exciting time of rethinking both exhibits and programming,” said Michigan History Center Director Sandra Clark. “Her recent experience curating the award-winning ‘Pacific Worlds’ exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California will be particularly valuable in furthering the center’s commitment to inclusion, active experience and community.”

Fischer previously was a curator at the Oakland Museum of California and The Henry Ford. After receiving her Ph.D. in the history of science and technology from the University of Minnesota, she turned to museum work, often sharing her thoughts on connecting museum collections and communities through her blog and professional presentations.

Fischer, who grew up in metro Detroit, said, "I'm delighted to be coming back home to help this vital institution tell Michigan's diverse stories. More than ever, authentic objects and authentic stories matter. It's a great honor and responsibility to guide the Michigan History Museum System during this time when museums are redefining how they connect people to history."

The Michigan History Center is part of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Its museum and archival programs foster curiosity, enjoyment and inspiration rooted in Michigan's stories. It includes the Michigan History Museum, 10 regional museums, Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve, and the Archives of Michigan.
