DNR sets Drummond Island deer management meeting
Public meeting will result in island hunting recommendations for next three years
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has scheduled a Dec. 6 public meeting to discuss the use of bait for deer hunting on Drummond Island.
The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Drummond Island Resort’s “19th Hole,” located at 33494 South Maxton Road on Drummond Island. Access to the island is by ferry only. Check out the ferry schedule and rates.
“The DNR is entering the next cycle for deer management regulations and will be advancing deer hunting recommendations for the next three years,” said Terry Minzey, DNR Upper Peninsula regional wildlife supervisor. “We intend to follow the recommendations outlined within the Drummond Island Comprehensive Resources Management Plan, which was approved in November 2015, and developed in cooperation with the DNR, with extensive input from island residents, hunters and other outdoor recreationists.”
The plan was developed to guide the management of state forest, wildlife and related public-trust natural resources on the roughly 126-square-mile island, which is situated in Lake Huron in Chippewa County.
Within the plan, a number of deer management options were outlined as potential changes. Of those options, the use bait as a hunting tactic received a significant amount of concern during the public comment period.
“Due to the high level of interest in this topic, DNR wildlife division staff will visit the Island for final discussion,” Minzey said. “The outcome of this meeting will determine the direction of the staff’s hunting recommendations for the next three years.”
