Repairs completed to Oman Creek boating access site in Gogebic County

Boat launch damaged significantly during historic summer flooding event

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has completed storm damage repairs to the Oman Creek boating access site.

The boating access site is located in western Gogebic County, several miles northwest of Ironwood, adjacent to Little Girl’s Point County Park, just upstream from the mouth of Oman Creek at Lake Superior. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has completed work on the storm-damaged Oman Creek boating access site in Gogebic County.

The boat launch was damaged significantly following devastating July storms that impacted the area. Construction on the launch began Oct. 3 and was expected to be completed by Oct. 31.

“We’re very pleased we were able to finish construction at this popular site two weeks ahead of schedule,” said Dan Dowdy, DNR supervisor for the Baraga State Park Management Unit. “This will allow for use this fall.”

The boating access site provides boaters and anglers access to Oman Creek and Lake Superior.

Work completed at the site by the DNR Parks and Recreation Division includes reconstructing the boating access ramp and shoreline protective features, and restoring the parking area.

The repair cost is estimated at $30,000 and is part of the overall expenses associated with the storm. Emergency funding will be sought.

On July 12, flooding from storms that hit the western U.P. with as much as 11 inches of rain washed out much of the Oman Creek boat launch and parking area.
