DNR to hold public meetings Aug. 23 and 24 to review Menominee River State Recreation Area draft management plan
The public is invited to review and comment on the draft management plan for the Menominee River State Recreation Area at two upcoming open house meetings Tuesday, Aug. 23, in Norway, Michigan, and Wednesday, Aug. 24, in Pembine, Wisconsin. The meetings will provide an opportunity to review and comment on future land and recreation management for the recreation area.
The Menominee River State Recreation Area, established in 2010, is located in Marinette County in Wisconsin and Dickinson and Menominee counties in Michigan. It consists of 7,652 acres of recreation lands that incorporate 17 miles of Menominee River frontage, including Piers Gorge, Quiver Falls Rapids and Pemene Falls. The recreation area offers camping, hiking, boating, fishing, hunting, and ATV and snowmobile trails.
The Michigan DNR and Wisconsin DNR cooperatively are planning for the future of the recreation area through the management plan. Management plans define a long-range management strategy that will assist the agencies in carrying out their mission to protect and preserve the site’s natural and cultural resources and to provide access to land- and water-based public recreation and educational opportunities.
The draft management plan emphasizes protection of the scenic river corridor for river-based recreation, but also envisions a number of improvements to the facilities that will advance recreation experiences. Improvements shared between the states include improved river access, restroom facilities, more camping opportunities, picnic areas, trail developments and educational and interpretive resources.
The draft management plan and related documents are available at http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/lands/masterplanning/MenomineeRiver/
Each open house will begin with a short presentation of the draft plan. Members of the public are welcome to attend at any time during the two-hour period to review the planning material, provide comments and talk to DNR staff. The open houses are scheduled for:
- Tuesday, Aug. 23, 6 to 8 p.m. CST, Norway High School,
300 Section St., Norway, Michigan
- Wednesday, Aug. 24, 5 to 7 p.m. CST, Pembine Township Hall,
N18765 Sauld St., Pembine, Wisconsin
The public may provide comments on the draft plan until Sept. 5 by email to jensend1@michigan.gov or jeff.prey@wisconsin.gov or by U.S. mail to Debbie Jensen, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Division, P.O. Box 30257, Lansing, MI 48909-7757.
