Enjoy summer-focused events in western Michigan state parks
Residents looking to better connect with Michigan's great outdoors will have plenty of opportunities at state parks and recreation areas in western Michigan. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources invites visitors to participate in a number of events at state parks and recreation areas in western Michigan this July and throughout summer.
Turkey Thursday at Clear Lake State Park (Montmorency County) Thursday, July 14 Join members of the National Wild Turkey Federation for some family fun. They will have their enclosed BB gun range open from 1 to 4 p.m. to teach shooting skills and will present a “Learn to Hunt Wild Turkey” class at 6 p.m. For more information, call 517-930-0947.
History of Grand Haven lighthouses at Grand Haven State Park (Ottawa County) Thursday, July 14 Staff from the Tri-Cities Museum, in partnership with the Friends of Grand Haven State Park, will present on the history and significance of the Grand Haven lighthouses and pier. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. and include a lighthouse craft activity for children to enjoy. For more information, call the park at 616-847-1309.
Walleye Fishing 202 at Ludington State Park (Mason County) Friday, July 22 Learn to catch the elusive walleye from a charter boat with Captain Ken Clark. Meet at the Hamlin Lake picnic shelter at 6 p.m. to enjoy this two-hour seminar. Two lucky participants will win a one-hour fishing trip with Ken immediately following the class. MI Big Green Gym
The MI Big Green Gym program is a partnership among the DNR, mParks (Michigan Recreation and Park Association), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and local fitness instructors. The goal of the program is to put the “out” back into workout by hosting fun outdoor programs like yoga, Pilates, strength training, cardio and more in parks across Michigan. This program also promotes fitness-focused events like 5Ks, sporting tournaments and bicycle rides. For more information and to view a list of statewide events, visit www.mibiggreengym.org.
Beast of the Beach at Grand Haven State Park (Ottawa County) Saturday, July 9 Enjoy a day of fast-paced beach wrestling open to all age groups and experience levels. Registration begins at 9 a.m. For more information, visit www.BeastoftheBeach.com or email Beachwrestling@comcast.net.
Grand Haven Triathlon at Grand Haven State Park (Ottawa County) Sunday, July 10 Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to enjoy this premier, long-standing event, which consists of an Olympic-distance triathlon and duathlon and sprint-distance triathlon and duathlon. Adaptive cycling clinic at Interlochen State Park (Grand Traverse County) Wednesday, July 13 Staff from the Lighthouse Neurological Rehabilitation Center will host an adaptive cycling clinic. Participants will ride around the park and be assisted with adapting and modifying cycling to meet their abilities and increase their independence and enjoyment of cycling. The staff also will host adaptive paddling clinics. For more information or to preregister, call 231-263-1350.
Sunset yoga at Mears State Park (Oceana County) Get outdoors with instructor Rebecca Urick, Smiling Lotus Yoga, for guided yoga classes in which participants will tune into the beauty of nature while practicing gentle yoga postures in the sand. Classes will take place Sundays and Tuesdays throughout the summer from 7 to 8 p.m. The classes are $10/walk-in and only cash or checks are accepted. Please bring water, a towel and sunscreen. Beach Yoga at Mears State Park (Oceana County) Kalon Arts and Yoga Company offers vinyasa flow beach yoga Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the summer from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Practice includes breath work, strength/balancing sequences and guided relaxation.
