Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, located in Ontonagon and Gogebic counties, now has an 18-hole disc golf course.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources staff at the park said the “golf” course has been set up in the downhill ski area at the park. There is no additional fee to play disc golf at the park. Only a Recreation Passport is needed for general park entry.A target on the scenic disc golf course at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in the western Upper Peninsula.

Disc golf is a game of accuracy as players throw Frisbees or similar discs at targets, which are hanging tournament-grade steel baskets.

As in regular golf, played with balls and clubs, players attempt to complete each hole in the fewest number of strokes, or in the case of disc golf, tosses.

“The back 9 is quite challenging,” said Bob Wild, park interpreter. “The front 9 has shorter holes. The back 9 is longer with great views of Lake Superior.”

The first and tenth tee starts in front of the ski chalet.

Discs are available for rent at the park’s campground store.

“The new course is open and ready for play,” Wild said. “This is the latest addition to our long list of activities park visitors can enjoy here at the Porcupine Mountains.”

See the Professional Disc Golf Association website for more information on disc golf.
