DNR offers bass fishing for beginners, summer-run steelhead clinics in Cadillac this June
The Department of Natural Resources Outdoor Skills Academy in Cadillac, Michigan, will offer two opportunities for Michigan anglers – or those who want to be – to improve their fishing skills, with bass and steelhead clinics in June.
“Whether you want to learn something new or brush up on your knowledge, the Outdoor Skills Academy is a great place to start, “ said DNR park interpreter and academy director Ed Shaw. “You don't have to be an accomplished angler. We'll teach you the skills you need to succeed.”
Bass Fishing for Beginners Saturday, June 4
This clinic begins at 10 a.m. in the classroom at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center, then will move outdoors for live demonstrations and practice. The Outdoor Skills Academy pro-staff will present various strategies and techniques for chasing largemouth and smallmouth bass in both the Great Lakes and inland lakes, including the use of plastics, Carolina rigging, Texas rigging and more. Participants are welcome to bring their own gear to the clinic. The cost for this class is $25, which includes lunch.
Summer Run Steelhead Clinic Saturday, June 25
This class, starting at 10 a.m., will cover strategies and techniques for chasing Michigan’s “chrome torpedoes.” Feel free to bring your own gear, if possible, or for those who are new to steelheading, some equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The “hands-on” portion of the clinic will be at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center, and then Sunday morning the class will hit the water, where the Outdoor Skills Academy pro-staff will show students how to fish and what to look for on the beautiful Manistee River. The cost for the class is $40.
Registration for the clinics is available on the Michigan e-store at Michigan.gov/estore.
Both clinics will be held at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center, located in Mitchell State Park at 6087 E. M-115 in Cadillac. For more information, contact Ed Shaw at shawe@michigan.gov, or call the Carl T. Johnson Center at 231-779-1321.
