Department of Natural Resources to open Lansing Customer Service Center Monday

New office near Michigan State University replaces deteriorating Rose Lake facility

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced it will open a new Customer Service Center at 4166 Legacy Parkway in Lansing Monday, May 23. The new office replaces the existing DNR Rose Lake Field Office on East Stoll Road in East Lansing, which will close as of Friday, May 20. A map to the new facility is available below for download.

The new Lansing office is one of 10 full-service DNR customer service centers around the state.

These centers are open to the public 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to help customers who want to buy a license, ask a question, learn about seasonal regulations, invite the DNR to participate in a school or community program, or simply learn more about Michigan's outdoor recreation opportunities.

Services the Lansing Customer Service Center will provide include:

  • Selling Recreation Passports; hunting, fishing and ORV licenses; and snowmobile and ORV trail permits.

  • Issuing a variety of permits, including permits for hunters, anglers and ORV riders with disabilities, crop damage permits for farmers, and salvage permits for roadkill animals.

  • Administering tests, including the proctored boater safety exam and experienced hunter, inland pilot and falconry tests.

  • Issuing temporary replacement hunter safety certificates.

  • Directing customers to the nearest licensed wildlife rehabilitator for injured animals.

"This move is part of the DNR’s overall strategy to better serve the public by locating offices strategically and to maximize resources and save money by consolidating facilities," said DNR Director Bill Moritz. "The new Lansing Customer Service Center is a more optimal location, in terms of both costs and accessibility to the public."

The Lansing Customer Service Center is in close proximity to Michigan State University and near a major highway exchange – U.S. 127 and I-96.

"We expect walk-in traffic to increase, allowing us to better serve those looking to learn more about outdoor recreation or to buy a license," said Steve Olson, area manager with the DNR Finance and Operations Division.

Olson said the move to the new facility will mean significant savings in deferred maintenance costs. Built in 1960, the Rose Lake structure is in serious disrepair, with deferred maintenance costs in excess of $700,000 – including outdated HVAC, plumbing, electrical, septic system, siding, carpet and paint. The out-of-date building will be demolished.

The price of the new Customer Service Center facility, constructed in 2003, was $650,000. The location will support the existing Rose Lake staff and 27 staff members from various DNR divisions, as well as future space for additional staff.

The Lansing Customer Service Center’s main phone number will be 517-284-4720. Through May 20, the Rose Lake Office can be reached at 517-641-4903.

There will be a continued DNR presence at the site of the current Rose Lake office. The shooting range at the existing facility will expand, and the department will construct an education building funded with the support of a grant from the Hal & Jean Glassen Memorial Foundation.
